Basketball on the Edge – John Wooden on True Success

John Wooden was an extraordinary coach, leader, and teacher. In this TED talk from 2001 Wooden explains his definition of true success. Here are a few highlights from the his talk, but is well worth your time to watch the video and hear the words directly from Coach Wooden.

  • Success = Peace of mind attained only through self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you’re capable.
  • Never stop trying to be the best you can be. Your effort is under your control.
  • Do the things that are necessary to reach your goals. If you make the effort to do the best of which you’re capable, trying to improve the situation that exists for you, that’s success and others can’t judge that. Forget what everyone else thinks. Be you and chase your own dreams, not those of someone else.
  • Don’t whine. Don’t complain. Don’t make excuses. Just get out there, and whatever you’re doing, do it to the best of your ability.
  • Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish great things. You can.
